![]() The Tlaxcaltecas called this place Tecpán Quauthtemallan, which in their language meant a royal residence with fortress of wood.
Later, when the Spanish invasión came, the Castilians who had information about this capital and who arrived here accompanied by a big number of Tlaxcaltecas men, because of the difficult to pronouncing the name of this place in Tlaxcalteca language and simply they decided to call it Tecpán Guatemala.
By geographical location of this Kaqchikel capital, the Spaniards chose as its operations center, that they call in a abridged form as Guatemala and here they founded the first Spanish city that is also named Guatemala. Later that name was extended throughout the region that is now Guatemala and Central America. This is the reason why it is said that Tecpán Guatemala was the Kaqchikel capital which was known Iximche and also was called the first capital of the Guatemala kingdom.
In the ruins of this first city of Guatemala, we can notice that this place keeps all the events that happened here. This archaeological site is located 93Km from the capital city, which can be visited on the same day.
This visit can be combined with other sites that worthwhile visit as the Helvetia Mill, the Jotay Botanical Garden, The Park and the square of Tecpán, where jut out the archaeological beauty o the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, the Municipal Palace and the Colonial stack built in stone carved in a form of a star. |
