 Between 1560 and 1570 was founded the village of Esquipulas, and populated by the Spaniards at the beginning by the Toltecs that gave rise to the indigenous ChortÃ. The name of Esquipulas as the etymology provided by the chronicler Francisco Fuentes and Guzman could derive from the Nahuatl, meaning "Land Florida".  Formerly as the language Chorti  was called Esquipulas.  This village was upgraded to a city on October 11, 1968, and his temple was located as a bull's basilica by Papa Juan XXIII on April 16, 1961, when he also received the category of Prelaticia City.
In Central America, Esquipulas is very important for tourism and religious level also is hosts several special events, and in Central American is called the capital of Faith in and open gate to peace.
Its main attraction is the Temple of Black-Christ of Esquipulas, which makes every day to increase tourism. Esquipulas has other attractions such as the Santiago Church, the Belen convent in Morola Cerrito, the Stone of the Compadres, Los Arcos, Cueva de las Minas, La Planta, Atulapa and, was opened Chatun Ecological Park, which Chorti means "Place of Stone", this park has swimming pools, water slides, lagoon fishing, restaurants, sports areas, and others. |
