This territory was inhabited by kekchis, Pocomchis, Achis and other groups in the arrival of the Spains, their main economic line is agriculture, adapted to different latitudes, for this reason this has abundant harvests.  The department has a very cave fauna and it is a interesting place to the Cavers so that exist many caves in the region.
